Windows Web Server 2008 is essentially a version of Windows Server 2008 designed primarily for the purpose of providing web services.
It includes Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0 along with associated services such as Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) and Telnet. It is available in a 64-bit version only and supports up to 4 processors. RAM is limited to 32GB.
Windows Web Server 2008 lacks many of the features present in other editions such as clustering, BitLocker drive encryption, multipath I/O, Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS), Removable Storage Management and SAN Management.
Designed to be used specifically as a single-purpose Web server, Windows Web Server 2008 delivers on a rock-solid foundation of Web infrastructure capabilities in the next-generation Windows Server 2008. Integrated with the newly re-architected IIS 7.0, ASP.NET, and the Microsoft .NET Framework, Windows Web Server 2008 enables any organization to rapidly deploy Web pages, Web sites, Web applications, and Web services.
Windows Web Server 2008 helps IT professionals to increase the flexibility and reliability of their server infrastructure while offering developers a more robust web and applications platform for building connected applications and services.
Improved administration and configuration tools
Use an efficient, task-focused administration tool to help securely delegate routine functions to site owners and developers. Reduce deployment time with the new XML-based configuration system, and centrally manage your IIS 7.0 configuration across Web servers with the new shared configuration mode.
Expanded support for development technologies
Provide robust hosting through IIS 7.0 support for ASP.NET, Windows Communication Foundation for XML services, classic ASP, and the new FastCGI module for other application frameworks such as PHP. Easily customize or extend IIS 7.0 via its new modular architecture using native (C/C++) or managed code (C#/ Visual Basic .NET).
Fewer Updates, improved troubleshooting
Enhance the security features of your Web server and reduce patching by installing only the components you need. Reduce downtime by easily diagnosing failures with improved diagnostics and troubleshooting tools, and take advantage of automatic application isolation for newly created Web sites. Use hardware more efficiently with the increased reliability and scalability of Windows Web Server 2008.
